To the World

Dearest World,

First of all I am sorry. I’m sorry that so many of my vices cause you so much harm. I live in a state of perpetual unwant and we both know how unfair that is. We both know that my world is not the reality that the vast majority of people face. We both know I have done very little to deserve this life, but I promise I will make something of it. I will forge something with my privilege. It is the least I can do.

Second, I want to thank you. Not only for my existence, but for the smiles to which I have been blessed to bear witness. All places I have seen within you far and near are populated by them. Happiness shown in bright eyes, bared teeth, and upturned lips. It is the glue that holds us together. Though our screens and raised voices may say otherwise, hold this as truth; we are the same, and you can count on my kindness as I know that I can on yours.

Finally, do not wallow in your failures, in your frustrations, in your shortcomings, or in your regrets. You can rule the world. First from within your own head, quashing negativity and sadness and nurturing the seeds of good, no matter how small they may seem. Then from your own home, teaching your family to love and to smile with others in joyful rebellion against the world they want us to be. Remember to trust in your fellow man, and we will all be one.

with love,

Andrew
